Chapter Eighteen

UNDISCLOSED LOCATION

Butterfly stared at their wet trousers. Warm piss soaked into the grey fabric, and shame flared on cheeks wet with tears. This was the ultimate humiliation, and it happened sometimes when they thought of the past. In recent months, guilt had brought on incontinence, and it was lucky they’d gone home when they had. Other people seeing this damp little accident would have resulted in a ribbing wicked enough to last a lifetime.

Butterfly couldn’t shake the feeling that chickens were coming home to roost. It was a heavier sense than any time before, an ominous, cloying presence that had followed him since he’d spotted that big yacht drawing into dock yesterday. Why, though? Nothing had changed. Everything was the same as usual.

Maybe I really have got psychic powers.

It wasn’t the first time Butterfly had thought that. Other people had commented on it, too. Times past, Butterfly had predicated many things, all of them coming true. Small stuff like: “They’ll break their leg if they’re not careful.” A leg had broken. “That window’s going to smash if he keeps swinging that bat the way he does.” A week later, that exact thing had happened.

Butterfly had known, right from the night they’d first done what they had, things would come out into the open at some point, it was just a matter of when. A voice had whispered as Butterfly had run away that dreadful time: “Karma will come for you later when you think you’re safe.”

Safe wasn’t on the cards.

I thought I was, but now…

Butterfly trembled. Maybe they should go and see a certain person, explain, omitting the true facts of what had occurred, have a chat about the result of their actions. It wouldn’t go down too well with Butterfly’s family, maybe not with the person in question either, but it had to be better than living on pins and needles, didn’t it?

If I make up a story so what I did isn’t viewed as evil but as a loving act, I could just about get away with it…
